The Unveiling

Simon Andriesz, a former managing director at a Wall Street brokerage, spent thousands of hours combing through the 3.5 million pages of documents released by U.S. authorities detailing the activities of financier Jeffrey Epstein. In early July, he discovered an email chain from 2018 in which Howard Lutnick – now U.S. Commerce Secretary – and Epstein discussed “prospects for a new start‑up” called Adfin. The exchange shows Epstein asking, “what do you think the prospects for Adfin are?” and Lutnick replying, “Producing revenue finally...become economically self‑sufficient.”

A Royal Connection

Andriesz also revealed a 2013 plan that implicated the then‑Prince Andrew Mountbatten‑Windsor. The document suggested Cantor Fitzgerald would loan £1 million to a firm controlled by the prince, with the stipulation that Andrew would only introduce wealthy clients to Cantor. Epstein warned the prince’s business aide, David Stern, about the exclusivity conditions, indicating early concerns about the arrangement. The plans never materialised, but they demonstrate a complex web of relationships still hidden until the Epstein files came to light.

Political Reactions

Following the leak, Lutnick was due to appear before the U.S. House Oversight Committee. When he testified, he stated, “I unequivocally condemn the conduct attributed to Jeffrey Epstein… the survivors deserve our respect.” Democrats on the committee protested, calling for his resignation and accusing him of lying. The Commerce Department rebuffed the allegations, describing them as “a desperate partisan distraction” and stating there was no evidence of wrongdoing.

Whistleblower's Struggle

Andriesz’s career and personal life have been heavily impacted by the revelations. After being terminated in 2017 for raising concerns about financial irregularities at BGC, he reportedly received a $420,000 whistleblowing award from U.S. regulators. Despite this, he says authorities have failed to hold BGC or Cantor Fitzgerald accountable for the alleged misconduct and to protect him from retaliation. He now lives quietly in a Cornish seaside village, describing the legal battles as “devastating” for his health and finances.

Lessons for Sustainable Governance

In an era where corporate responsibility and climate stewardship are under scrutiny, this case highlights the critical importance of transparency. Stakeholders and regulators alike must ensure that political and corporate actors disclose all potential conflicts and avoid opaque relationships that could undermine policy effectiveness. Only through robust whistleblowing protections, ethical oversight, and open governance can businesses align their operations with the sustainable goals that define our era.
