E Jean Carroll, 82, has asked a judge to order former President Donald Trump to pay the $5 million in damages awarded by a New York jury for sexual assault and defamation.
Carroll’s request follows yesterday’s Supreme Court decision to decline reviewing Trump’s appeal, ending a series of legal battles that have spanned federal courts for four years.
Investigators have said the writer accepted all of Trump’s demands for payment delays, which now amount to almost $5.8 million once interest and legal costs are included.
“Given the extraordinary lengths he has taken to avoid such payments and that each of those efforts has been denied in full, cooperation ends today,” Carroll’s lawyers wrote. “It is time for him to pay.”
The case began in May 2023 when a New York jury found Trump liable for the sexual assault claim made in the 1990s and awarded Carroll the damages. Trump has denied the allegations.
While Trump has repeatedly alleged that the judge overseeing the civil trial allowed improper evidence, a federal appeals court upheld the jury’s verdict, ruling no errors required a new trial.
Following the Supreme Court ruling, Trump denied Carroll’s allegations again on social media, declaring the case a “weaponization” of law for political gain.
Carroll’s attorneys have included Trump’s latest posts in their new filings. The lawyers also noted his appeal of a separate 2024 ruling that awarded her nearly $84 million for defamation; that appeal was denied by a panel of federal judges last year.
