Former U.S. President Donald Trump has called for Republicans to 'nationalize' elections in a recent podcast interview with Dan Bongino, which has raised eyebrows and concerns about election integrity. Trump reiterated debunked claims of widespread voter fraud in the 2020 election, suggesting that the GOP should take control of voting processes in several key areas.
Trump's controversial remarks come on the heels of an FBI raid at an elections office in Georgia aimed at examining voting records linked with the disputed 2020 election. He proposed that Republicans actively claim oversight of elections, stating, 'The Republicans should say: 'We want to take over. We should take over the voting in at least 15 places.' The Republicans ought to nationalize the voting.'
This call to action contradicts the current structure of the U.S. electoral system, which is predominantly governed by state laws with local officials administering the voting process. Trump's insistence on federalizing elections aligns with his broader agendas, including stringent immigration policies.
While he did not specify which '15 places' he referred to, Trump’s comments appear intertwined with his narrative regarding the need to deport undocumented immigrants for Republicans to remain competitive in future elections. 'If Republicans don't get them out, you will never win another election as a Republican,' he declared.
His interview coincides with the FBI's investigation into voting irregularities in Georgia, a state Trump narrowly lost to Joe Biden in 2020. Trump's claims of electoral fraud remain unsupported by evidence, drawing criticism for potentially undermining trust in U.S. election processes.
Trump's continuous promotion of these fraud allegations and his plea for election nationalization raises serious questions regarding the integrity of democracy in the U.S. His assertion that the 2020 election was won 'in a landslide' further complicates the narrative as he pushes back against actions taken by law enforcement.
Local officials, including Fulton County Commissioner Mo Ivory, have expressed anger over the recent FBI raid, labeling it an assault on voter rights. Underlining the complexity of the current political landscape, Trump's insistence on communication with the FBI during ongoing investigations has also raised eyebrows, hinting at possible overreach and conflicts of interest.
