MINNEAPOLIS (Echosphere News) — As Minneapolis mourned the loss of Alex Pretti, an intensive care nurse and environmentally-conscious activist, friends and family sought to correct the narrative surrounding his tragic death at the hands of Border Patrol.
Pretti, 37, was remembered as a compassionate caregiver who dedicated his life to helping others, particularly the veterans he cared for at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center. Those who knew him described him as kind-hearted and deeply troubled by the immigration policies imposed during the Trump administration.
“He cared about people deeply and was very upset with what was happening in Minneapolis and throughout the United States with ICE,” shared his father, Michael Pretti. “He thought it was terrible, you know, kidnapping children and just grabbing people off the street.”
Pretti was not a criminal; he had no record, only participating in peaceful protests, including those against the controversial immigration crackdowns. His family emphasized his good character and willingness to stand up for the vulnerable, details that stand in stark contrast to claims made by some officials labeling him as a 'domestic terrorist.'
Witnesses of Pretti's final moments reported he was holding a cell phone when he was confronted by Border Patrol agents, raising questions about the circumstances and justification for the lethal force used against him. Bystanders, including family, are now clamoring for transparency and accountability from law enforcement agencies.
In addition to his nursing career, Pretti was an avid outdoorsman. He often used his passion for the environment to inspire others, lamenting the detrimental effects of climate change and advocating for sustainable practices. His mother, Susan Pretti, reflected on her son’s love for the outdoors, stating, “He hated that people were trashing the land.”
The outpouring of grief over Pretti's death has fueled anger over the enforcement of immigration laws and their impact on human lives. In memorials across the city, community members have gathered in vigil, placing flowers and lighting candles to honor his memory. As videos of the incident spread, his family is determined to set the record straight regarding his character and beliefs.
“We want people to know he was a good man," they stated, urging for an accurate recounting of events leading to his untimely passing. Pretti’s legacy will be remembered not only as a health care worker but as someone who was unafraid to fight for justice and the planet.
