NEW YORK (AP) — On Tuesday, dozens of protesters were arrested after occupying the lobby of a Hilton Garden Inn in Manhattan, taking a stand against what they claim is the hotel’s role in housing federal immigration officers.
A spokesperson from the hotel declined to comment, and requests for information from Hilton’s press office remained unanswered. The presence of immigration officials at the hotel was not confirmed, with a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson stating that such details are not disclosed.
The protest occurred amid heightened immigration enforcement actions under President Trump's administration, which have drawn criticism and widespread opposition, including tragic incidents reported in Minneapolis.
Demonstrators filled the lobby of the Hilton Garden Inn, wearing shirts emblazoned with “Hilton houses ICE” and urged the hotel chain to stop accommodating federal officers. The New York Police Department reported that officers attempted to clear the lobby before arresting remaining activists. Witnesses from The Associated Press documented dozens being taken away in police buses.
As protests against immigration policies intensify, this demonstration highlights a growing unrest regarding corporate involvement in governmental immigration practices.
