LAS VEGAS (AP) — Nathan Chasing Horse, the actor famous for his portrayal in 'Dances With Wolves,' has been found guilty of sexually assaulting Indigenous women and girls, a verdict that resonates deeply within Indian Country.
The Las Vegas jury delivered a verdict on Friday, convicting him on 13 of 21 charges primarily linked to his abuse of a minor who was just 14 when the assaults began. Chasing Horse, 49, could face up to 25 years in prison, with sentencing set for March 11.
This conviction follows years of accusations and a trial that shed light on his exploitation of his status as a Lakota medicine man to manipulate and abuse vulnerable women.
The courtroom was charged with emotion upon the reading of the verdict, with supporters of the victims expressing relief and sorrow in a candid display of solidarity. “I just hope that the people who came forward over the years and made complaints against Nathan Chasing Horse can find some peace in this,” said Deputy District Attorney William Rowles.
Chasing Horse's defense attorney expressed disappointment and confusion over the verdict, alluding to doubts regarding the integrity of the testimonies presented.
Born on the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota, Chasing Horse's career has faced a critical turning point amidst this harassment trial that reflects a broader societal issue concerning violence against Indigenous peoples.
The trial revealed alarming patterns of behavior, with testimonies from victims detailing years of manipulation and assault. Prosecutors emphasized the alarming invisibility of such crimes, especially in cases involving minority communities, where trust and authority figures can exploit systemic vulnerabilities.
“Today’s verdict sends a clear message that exploitation and abuse will not be tolerated, regardless of the defendant’s public persona or claims of spiritual authority,” said Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson.
