Mountaineer Nirmal Purja Lost in Pakistan Avalanche
Renowned climber and former British Army soldier Nirmal Purja has perished in a fatal avalanche on Broad Peak, Pakistan, the company Elite Expeditions announced. They expressed profound sadness and immense heartbreak in the event.
The loss extended to all nine other members of the multinational team, resulting in a tragedy of ten fatalities on 8,047 metres (26,400 feet) in the Karakoram range.
Nirmal Purja earned global fame after completing the world’s fourteen highest peaks in just over six months in 2019 and was celebrated in the 2021 Netflix documentary “14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible.”
Chief rescue teams in Pakistan were conducting searches, while Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah also confirmed the deaths, noting the shock of the loss of six Nepalese and four foreign climbers.
Broad Peak’s historical ascent dates back to 1957, but the mountain has a record of dozens of climbers lost in accidents. 2013 saw at least six fatalities, a pattern that continues as climbing routes demand skill and respect for changing mountain conditions brought on by climate change.
The incident reflects the growing risk as warming temperatures accelerate snowfall, melt rates and the formation of hazardous avalanches on high‑altitude peaks.
