A person of interest who was detained in connection with a deadly shooting at Brown University in the US will be released shortly, local officials have said. Providence Police Chief Col Oscar Perez stated that there was not enough evidence to prosecute the individual, with Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha noting that the evidence now points in a different direction. The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities seeking additional video evidence to track down the actual suspect.

The shooting, which occurred on Saturday at the Ivy League university, resulted in the deaths of two individuals and left nine others injured. Col Perez, in a joint news conference, confirmed investigators do not believe the released detainee is the same individual identified in CCTV footage made public shortly after the shooting. The footage depicts a suspect dressed in dark clothing walking away from the scene.

Following the release of the footage, FBI Director Kash Patel reported that the detained individual had been located in a Coventry hotel based on a lead from Providence Police. Perez further clarified that officers are not pursuing any additional suspects, instead focusing on amassing evidence.

At a news briefing, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley reported that seven of the injured individuals are in stable condition, while one remains in critical condition. The shooting incident in a classroom around 4 PM local time at the Holley engineering building raised extensive concerns across campus, leading to an emergency shelter-in-place order that was lifted the following day.

Brown University President Christina Paxson shared that all victims, including those killed and injured, were students. The identities of the deceased and most of the injured have not yet been publicly disclosed. Reports indicate that one of the injured students, Kendall Turner, is an alumna of Durham Academy, a private school in North Carolina.

Paxson has expressed heartfelt condolences to the families affected, emphasizing the deep impact of the tragedy on the Brown community. A vigil is planned for the evening to honor the victims, as an ongoing community effort seeks to provide support during this difficult time. President Donald Trump has also offered prayers for the injured students and mentioned the tragic increase in mass shootings across the United States this year.
